JFK Medical Center

JFK Medical Center is a 460 bed acute medical surgical hospital in Atlantis, Florida. Its occupancy rate is approximately 88%, with virtually no seasonal variation, and over 26,000 inpatient admissions per year. It serves a broad range of patients, and has an established reputation in the area of cardiac services (performing over 500 cardiac surgeries and 7,000 cardiac interventions per year), acute stroke services (250 to date since certification as a stroke center in late 2005), and cancer care (over 27,000 procedures during the last 12 months). Among its many innovative programs are a vascular center performing advanced carotid and other peripheral stenting procedures, a regional neuroscience center, bariatric surgery, a sleep lab, a state of the art palliative care facility, a wound center and an orthopedically-directed human motion institute. The facility has the latest digital MRI equipment and has a 64 slice CT scanner. Radiology is accessible on the floor with a regional PACS system. Approximately 500 physicians are members of the active staff. The hospital has progressively embraced quality initiatives, including IHI and Leapfrog recommendations. JFK physician staff have been engaged in the development of and teaching in the the University of Miami regional campus educational program, which began two years ago at the University of Miami at FAU, approximately a 20 minute drive to the campus from the hospital.

VAMC

The West Palm Beach VAMC, the facility some 20 minutes from JFK, is an eleven year old modern facility, caring for approximately 70,000 veterans in Palm Beach County. West Palm Beach Veterans Affairs Hospital is considered to be one of the most highly regarded VA hospitals in the country. Its full time department of medicine includes 66 physicians, 20 of whom are hospitalists and the remainder of whom are subspecialists. The Primary Care Department, directed by an internist, also includes dermatologists and neurologists. With its EMR and routinely measured patient outcomes, it is repeatedly recognized as an efficient facility committed to quality care. Many of its full time staff have been recruited from previous training programs or academic departments. The leadership of the facility has been committed to developing training programs. It is a short distance from the Scripps Florida Research Institute and the FAU regional medical campus.
